PHS softball: Kamden Combs

Kamden Combs, seen here earlier this season during a home game, allowed one hit and no walks in Tuesday's 2-1 win at Newport.

Philomath senior Amie Russell hit a solo home run and sophomore Kamden Combs threw a complete-game one-hitter in a 2-1 victory Tuesday at Newport.

The Warriors took the season series over the Cubs and have overtaken Sweet Home for first place in the Oregon West. The two teams are tied in the loss column but Philomath beat the Huskies two out of three times this spring.

In the win over Newport, Philomath took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Russell led off the inning with a solo home run.

Newport tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The team’s leadoff batter reached on an error and later scored on a two-out single.

But the Warriors were able to go up 2-1 in the top of the seventh.

Tasha Varnado, who had a diving catch in left to end the sixth inning, worked a walk to lead off the seventh. Two batters later, Lara Hunter singled to give the Warriors two base runners. Reagan Larson then put the ball in play and reached on an error while Kylee Galvan, who had gone in for Varnado as a pinch runner, scored the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Newport got its first batter on base when she was hit by a pitch. But Combs settled down and ended the game with a strikeout, ground-ball out pitcher to first and a thrilling diving catch by Kaili Saathoff in center field.

Combs had one of her best outings of the season in the circle. In seven innings, she threw just 79 pitches and allowed one hit, no earned runs and no walks with four strikeouts.

Offensively, Philomath had just five hits in the game. Hunter had two of those hits with singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

The Warriors (17-8 overall, 14-3 Oregon West) ends the regular season Thursday at home against Woodburn. The team’s seniors will be recognized at the game. The team will then turn its attention to the state playoffs. As of Tuesday night, the Warriors had an OSAA ranking of No. 8.
