PHS baseball: Brandn Vogler

Brandn Vogler allowed five hits in Tuesday's win at Woodburn.

Senior Michael Slater drove in six runs and senior Brandn Vogler threw a five-hitter in Philomath’s 18-2 baseball victory Tuesday at Woodburn.

With the victory, Philomath improves to 12-5 in the Oregon West Conference. The Warriors will go for the sweep at home Thursday in the regular-season finale.

Philomath trails Sweet Home by one game in the loss column for second place in the conference. If the Huskies can win either Wednesday or Thursday against first-place Newport, then the Warriors would have to settle for third. The top two teams in the standings earn automatic berths in the state playoffs.

In the win over Woodburn Tuesday, Slater had half of the team’s hits by going 4 for 5, which included two triples, and six RBIs.

Philomath collected just eight hits in all while scoring its 18 runs. Woodburn contributed to the cause with nine errors, hitting six batters and walking four others.

Vogler was tough on the mound. In his five innings, he allowed five hits, two earned runs, four walks and had four strikeouts in a 77-pitch performance.

The Warriors improve to 15-10 overall and as of Tuesday, were at No. 10 in the OSAA rankings.
