PHS softball: Riley Weaver, Lara Hunter

Riley Weaver throws to Lara Hunter at first during a recent home game. The Warriors lost 4-3 Thursday at Newport.

Philomath High's softball team nearly pulled off an impressive comeback Thursday at Newport by scoring three runs with two outs in the seventh inning but the home-field Cubs held on for a 4-3 victory.

The loss was the first in Oregon West Conference play this season for the Warriors.

Philomath (7-6 overall) couldn't get much offense going against Newport pitcher Hattie Imbler-Bremner, who went the distance for the Cubs and allowed four hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

Tasha Varnado had Philomath's only hit through the first six innings of the game. In the seventh, Kamden Combs started off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch but then the next two Warriors went down on strikes.

Lara Hunter then put the ball in play and reached on an error while Combs scored. Reagan Larson did the same, getting aboard on a Newport error, to bring the tying run to the plate.

At the top of the order, Hannah Williams responded with a single to load the bases. Kaili Saathoff followed by delivering a two-run single to cut Newport's lead to 4-3.

Amie Russell walked to load the bases but the game ended on a ground-out to first base.

Combs threw all six innings against Newport and allowed just two hits. She finished with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

The Oregon West now has five teams within one game of each other in the standings. Sweet Home and Philomath are both 4-1 with Cascade, Stayton and Newport all sitting a game back at 3-2.

The Warriors are scheduled to play at home Monday against Woodburn before making a trip to Stayton Wednesday.
