PHS wrestling: Connar Kohn

Philomath's Connar Kohn won an individual title Saturday at Pleasant Hill along with teammates Brooks Stearns and Blake Niemann.

Five Philomath High wrestlers worked their way into championship bouts at Saturday’s King of the Hill tournament at Pleasant Hill. Three of those five won titles with senior Brooks Stearns at 195 pounds, sophomore Connar Kohn at 220 and freshman Blake Niemann at 106.

The final round featured an all-Philomath matchup at 195 pounds. Stearns advanced with a pin in 1:29 over a Dayton wrestler and a 5-2 decision over a Shelton grappler. Meanwhile, sophomore Matt Workman pinned those same two opponents to earn a shot at his teammate. In the championship match, the elder Stearns pinned Workman in the first period.

Kohn rolled into the 220-pound finale with pins over Douglas and Central Linn opponents and then had to work hard for a 15-12 victory over Shelton’s Benjamin Lutz.

Niemann stuck three straight opponents to win the 106 weight class. Two of those three victories came over Central Linn wrestlers, the last coming in finals over Cory Stutz with a pin in just 12 seconds.

Freshman Blaise Pindell made the finals at 126 with pins over Glide and Central Linn opponents. In the finale, Shelton’s Rudy Zambrano beat Pindell on a 12-4 decision.

In the team standings, Dayton took first place by a slim margin over runner-up Glide. The race for third was very close with four teams in the mix. Sheldon did well enough to finish with 111 points and third place, followed by Central Linn’s 110, Philomath’s 108 and Pleasant Hill’s 107.

A day earlier, Philomath High’s Emma Lalande and Reynece Ryan both came out of the Junction City Davis Cabinets Girls Tournament with first-place finishes.

Lalande, a foreign-exchange student from Norway, won her bracket with pins over opponents from Sutherlin, Junction City and North Eugene. In her championship bout, Lalande dominated her counterpart with a 15-0 technical fall.

Ryan, a freshman, had little competition in her bracket and defeated the same Junction City opponent twice with pins of 2:36 and 29 seconds.

The Warriors are scheduled to host a four-way meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the PHS gym. Joining Philomath will be Central, Corbett and Gladstone.

The PHS boys then head to the Screamin’ Eagle tournament Saturday at Santiam Christian while the girls head out to the Alsea Bay Classic.
