PHS baseball: Dylan Bennett

Philomath junior Dylan Bennett connects in Monday's game at Sweet Home.

In an early baseball showdown for first place in the Oregon West Conference, Sweet Home pulled away from Philomath in the fifth inning and held on for an 11-7 victory.

The Huskies remain unbeaten in league play at 4-0 while the Warriors drop to 3-1. The two teams will meet again Wednesday in Philomath and Thursday at Sweet Home.

Philomath had just five hits in the game with junior Dylan Bennett going 2 for 2.

Down 4-0 through three innings, Philomath pulled to within one run with two in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the fourth, senior Brooks Stearns singled and came around to score on a Bennett double. Bennett scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Brody Hiner.

In the fifth, freshman Cameron Ordway singled, stole second and scored on an error.

But Sweet Home responded in the bottom of the fifth with five runs and then added two more in the sixth.

Philomath scored four in the top of the seventh while sending 10 batters to the plate. The Warriors took advantage of walks, wild pitches and hit batsmen to score those runs. In fact, Philomath didn't have a single hit in the inning with five reaching on walks and two hit by pitches.

Marshall Brattain got the start and was the pitcher of record. Brandn Vogler pitched in relief for one inning.
