The Philomath High School softball team opened the season Wednesday with a 4-1 loss at Thurston.

A Class 5A opponent that made the state playoffs last season, the Colts scored twice in both the third and fourth innings and then depended on pitching and defense to notch the victory.

Philomath jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Warriors finished the game with four hits against Thurston senior pitcher Harmony Stevens.

For the Warriors, senior Hannah Williams went 1 for 2 with a double. Junior Ashley Matthews was 1 for 3 with one RBI. Senior Amie Russell and junior Kylie Barnes picked up the team’s other two hits.

Philomath sophomore Kamden Combs started at pitcher and went four innings, allowing six hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Barnes threw the final two innings and allowed two hits and no runs with two walks.

Junior Savana Decker led Thurston (1-0) by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Stevens helped her own cause with a home run and two RBIs.

The Warriors (0-1) will go up against another Class 5A team Thursday in their home opener against Dallas.
