PHS wrestling: Brooks Stearns

Runner-up finishes by Brooks Stearns, Connar Kohn and Blake Niemann helped the Philomath High School wrestling team to a second-place showing at Saturday’s Santiam Christian Screamin’ Eagle in Adair Village.

Sprague won the 10-school tournament with 244 points and the Warriors were second with 205 to edge third-place Scio’s 181.

Kohn, wrestling at 195 pounds, had just two matches. Kohn, a sophomore who is 15-3 on the season, pinned his first opponent in just over a minute before falling to a Scio wrestler in finals.

Stearns, a senior, won three of four bouts at 182 with pins over Monroe and Sprague opponents among them. In finals, he lost to a Siletz Valley grappler.

Niemann, a freshman, won two of three at 106 with a pin over a Corvallis opponent and a decision over a Sprague wrestler. He lost in the championship match to another Sprague opponent.

Freshman Blaise Pindell won three of four and placed third. In the third-place match, he won over a Corvallis wrestler on a first-period pin. Senior Noah Estes at heavyweight also placed third, winning his medal-round match over a Gervais foe.

Four other PHS wrestlers placed fourth — senior Jayden Jensen at 152, sophomore Matthew Hamlet at 160, sophomore Austin Murphree at 170 and sophomore Issiah Blackburn at 182.


Junior Emma Lalande and freshman Reynece Ryan both finished in first place at the Alsea Bay Women’s Classic Saturday in Waldport. Senior Rio Jensen placed second.

In the 145-155 weight division, Lalande pinned both of her opponents in the first period. She beat an Oakridge wrestler in 1:10 and a Newport opponent in 1:40.

Ryan won the 190 division with a pin over a North Lake wrestler in just 16 seconds and a pin over a Crow opponent in 46 seconds.

Jensen pinned her first two opponents before falling to a Reedsport Charter wrestler in finals.
