Hey Warriors fans, today is Monday, Oct. 7.
It’s going to be a fun week for Philomath High athletics and it starts tonight with the volleyball team’s trip over to Sweet Home.
On Saturday, the Warriors competed in a challenging tournament, the Mt. Hood Invitational, at Barlow High. Philomath posted a win over 6A Gresham, 25-16, 21-25, 15-11 and lost matches to 5A Ridgeview, 25-21, 25-7, 6A Clackamas, 25-12, 25-22 and 6A Barlow, the host school (scores not posted).
“The girls were struggling with distractions about their homecoming dance but we really treated yesterday like practice getting ready for our Monday match,” PHS coach Denee Newton said. “We are still really working on transition and our serve receive is taking a hit because of it.”
Sage Kramer and Abigail Brown were attack leaders in the weekend tournament with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

Philomath will need to bring its “A game” to compete with Sweet Home, especially on the Huskies’ home floor. In the most recent OSAAtoday coaches poll, Sweet Home was ranked No. 1 with Philomath at No. 5. The Huskies are No. 2 in the OSAA rankings behind Valley Catholic. The No. 1 Valiants have lost just once this season — and that was to Philomath.
That’s just an early taste of what to expect. Tomorrow, the soccer teams will take on Sweet Home — the boys in Philomath at 3:30 and the girls on the road at 6:30. The volleyball team will host Cascade Wednesday and the football team plays on Thursday this week with a trip over to Sweet Home (sports schedules are a little off because of Friday’s statewide in-service day).
The big event of the week, however, arrives Saturday with the 34th annual Paul Mariman Invitational. I’ll get into that later in the week but it’s going to be a good one with some of the top 4A teams in the state making appearances.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you at the next game.
