Hey Warriors fans, today is Monday, Sept. 30.
Philomath High’s highest-profile athlete competing at the collegiate level continues to be Haylie Bennett with the Oregon State volleyball program. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter was a force in her high school days with the Warriors and she’s had some great performances with the Beavers.
Now a redshirt junior, Bennett’s been aggressive on the attack this season with Oregon State. The team is off to a 2-0 start in Pac-12 play for the first time since 2004 and in those victories over Oregon and Colorado, Bennett led the team in kills with 16 in each contest.
After an impressive five-set win over the Ducks to open Pac-12 play, Bennett had this to say:
“Every day in practice we have to go out and re-earn your spot because we have so much depth. So we know every day that there is someone beyond you that is just as good, so every day you’re fighting for your spot but at the same time, we’re really supporting each other. We have a really good thing going here.”

From my past interviews with Bennett and covering her back in high school, I know how much of an emphasis she places on the team approach to volleyball with love for her teammates. If she keeps playing the same way, I’m thinking her job on the net might be fairly safe.
I’m really happy to see Bennett playing at a high level after the injury issues she had as a sophomore. That followed a redshirt freshman season in which she started all 33 matches.
You can see Bennett and the Beavers later this week. Oregon State (8-5 overall) plays at home Friday against Cal and Saturday against Stanford.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you at the next game.
