PHS volleyball: Joelle Berger

Philomath's Joelle Berger goes for a kill while Laura Noble (11) and Claire Skinkis (1) look on.

Hey Warriors fans, today is Saturday, Nov. 9.

The Philomath High volleyball team will play at noon today up at Forest Grove High School against Junction City with the winner earning a third-place trophy and the loser settling for fifth.

The Warriors would rather be playing in the championship match, of course. But a pretty darn good Sweet Home squad beat Philomath for a third time this season in straight sets.

Philomath shouldn’t hang its heads. The win in the quarterfinals over Sisters was significant in a few ways. One that sticks out to me is the fact that a No. 10 seed had never played in the 4A semifinals. Based on the state volleyball archives, it appears that the OSAA started seeding teams in the manner that is used today beginning in 2013.

Since 2013, the highest-seeded team to ever make the semifinals prior to what Philomath accomplished yesterday was No. 6-seeded Crook County in 2014.

Today’s a big day for PHS athletics. Besides the volleyball team playing Junction City, the girls soccer team will take on Marist Catholic in the quarterfinals in Eugene. That begins at 1 p.m. The boys and girls cross-country teams will be competing for state titles on the Lane Community College course. The girls run at 11:45 and the boys at 12:20.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you at the next game.
