PHS volleyball: Ashlynn Barron, Sage Kramer

Sophomores Ashlynn Barron and Sage Kramer go for a block against Cascade.

Hey Warriors fans, today is Thursday, Oct. 10.

Philomath High graduate and Oregon State volleyball standout Hailey Bennett will help the Warriors prepare for a key Oregon West Conference match at Sisters set for this coming Tuesday.

“Hailey Bennett is going to come practice with us and we’re just going to study Sisters,” PHS coach Denee Newton said. “Sisters has a couple of girls who just know how to attack the ball hard every time and I think our go-to hitters are also the ones who are going to be playing defense and they can’t hit it at themselves.”

Bennett will fill that role nicely while simulating the type of hard hitting that Sisters brings.

“Hailey’s going to be huge and big and hit hard at them and we’ll just work hard on defense and with our blockers and be ready to hit back,” Newton said.

Joelle Berger, who is now in her senior season with the Warriors, believes the team is ready to make a playoff run. After the Sisters match this coming Tuesday, Philomath will only have Woodburn and Newport remaining.

Although coaches and players believe there’s always more work to be done, Berger said the Warriors are prepared for the postseason.

“I think if the it (playoffs) were tomorrow, we would still do damage,” she said. “I’m excited to go to state this year.”

For the football fans, don’t forget that Philomath plays tonight at Sweet Home. A statewide in-service day on Friday moved up games to Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you at the next game.
