Hey Warriors fans, today is Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Welcome to a new sports blog that you’ll find only on PhilomathExpress.com. Each day, I’ll offer commentary on Philomath High, Oregon West Conference and Class 4A sports. Once the season begins, I’ll supplement the regular coverage with a few paragraphs on the previous evening’s sports events and take a look ahead at what’s coming up. On off days, I’ll throw out other various topics that you might find interesting, analyze what’s going on in the Oregon West or in 4A.
Obviously, the season has started yet but we’re getting close with practices set to open Aug. 19. The sports parent meeting has passed, various camps have been going on and the real deal is just around the corner. Philomath Athletic Director Tony Matta said to be able to practice, all athletes must be registered on FamilyID — the system that the Warriors program uses — have a current physical on file at the high school and have paid their fall participation fee.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve been brainstorming on ways to mix up my coverage of the PHS teams a little bit, not only to expand what the newspapers offers but also to work in some things that I usually don’t have the time or space to produce.
One of those ideas is this online blog. I often mention sports in my regular blog (which is combined to make up the Random Thoughts column in the printed edition) but I hold back because I don’t want to overrun that feature with only sports-related content.
You have free articles remaining.
An addition that will appear both in print and online will be a weekly feature that I’m calling “Game Day.” I plan to cut down this feature into four areas — The Week Ahead, Five Things, By the Numbers, and In the Books.
The Week Ahead should be self-explanatory but basically, I’ll rundown what each team will be doing in the upcoming week along with other various team tidbits. Five Things will be a list of five interesting angles on PHS athletics that I come up with each week. By the Numbers will feature PHS athletic references to three separate numbers. And In the Books will feature some sports news out of the Warriors’ past.
Anyway, please check PhilomathExpress.com each day for my latest “Warriors Today” blog. Unless my schedule just completely throws me off (and that’s possible — this one-man newspaper gig can be a challenge at times), you should find a new blog going live each morning at 5 a.m.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you at the game.
