Spending time in a kayak is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors. Getting that kayak to the water? Not so much fun. Traditional kayaks are heavy, and you need a roof rack or trailer to transport them. Inspired by origami, the creators of Oru Kayaks design boats that are much easier to transport and store while still providing high-level performance. The result of their work is an ingenious line of kayaks that can be folded into slim, 40-pound satchels (about the size of a large portfolio) carried by one person.
Their latest addition to the line-up is the Haven, a two-person boat that still compacts to a size small enough to be taken on the subway — 33 inches by 15 inches by 29 inches. It takes only 10 minutes to unfold the boat to its seaworthy size of 16 feet long and 31 inches wide. In this tandem boat, you’ll have two seatbacks and footrests, which are all adjustable for any size person. If you’re traveling solo, you can remove a seat and have more space for storage. Assembling the boat is easy, with color-coded stitching to mark the folds and matching straps and buckles to be attached and tightened. You’ll end up with a rigid boat that’s much more responsive than an inflatable kayak. A rail system in the canopy allows for additional mounts to hold things like fishing equipment, beverages, or cameras. With the Haven, you and your partner can enjoy more time on the water, avoid buying a roof rack and make room in the garage for your car.
