West Albany High School competes against South Salem in a Sept. 15 home game. After four years, the Bulldogs will be rejoining the Mid-Willamette Conference in the fall of 2018, thanks to an OSAA recommendation released on Thursday.

West Albany High School will rejoin the Mid-Willamette Conference next fall if a plan is approved next month.

The Oregon School Activities Association’s classification and districting committee’s final recommendation released Thursday calls for West Albany to leave the 6A classification for 5A. The Bulldogs are currently in their fourth year in the Greater Valley Conference.

West Albany had widespread athletic success during its previous eight years in 5A, including three football state titles. They often placed among the top teams in the classification in volleyball, girls basketball, boys golf and softball.

The proposal will be voted on for final approval by the OSAA’s delegate assembly and executive board Oct. 16 in Wilsonville.

Proposals previous to the one released Thursday had West Albany remaining in 6A. Enrollment cutoffs were changed to include West in 5A.

It will be a new-look Mid-Willamette as West Albany, Cascade and North Salem join current members Central, Corvallis, Crescent Valley, Dallas, Lebanon, Silverton and South Albany.

Cascade is a 4A school. North Salem, of the Greater Valley Conference, petitioned the OSAA to be moved down from 6A. West Albany’s move to the 6A classification beginning in the 2014-15 school year was the first time the Bulldogs had not been in the same league as crosstown rival South Albany.

The classification and districting committee held its 13th and final meeting Monday. Many of those meetings have included public testimony. Nineteen different draft proposals were created.

Representatives from West Albany and Greater Albany Public Schools testified Monday, asking for the school to return to 5A. Cascade had a large contingent asking that its school remain in 4A.

Bend, Mountain View and Summit will move to the GVC if the plan is approved as expected.
