An Albany man stabbed his mother in the hand on Thursday morning, apparently in a disagreement over gas money, but she thought her son was going to kill her, according to court paperwork.

Jeremiah Kevin Sullivan, 29, was charged with second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felony fourth-degree assault and menacing on Friday afternoon in Linn County Circuit Court. Three of the four crimes were labeled as domestic violence.

Prosecutor Keith Stein asked for $100,000 security. He noted that Sullivan has a prior unlawful use of a weapon conviction involving a knife, and that after the incident, Sullivan fled his family’s home in the 3100 block of South Shore Drive.

That prompted a police search and two Albany schools, South Shore Elementary and Waverly Elementary, were placed under a lockout order.

However, Stein acknowledged that Sullivan had not failed to appear for past court hearings.

Defense attorney Elijah Brown asked for $50,000 bail, and during the hearing, he mentioned that Sullivan was dealing with mental health issues.

Judge Michael Wynhausen set security in the case at $50,000.

The next hearing in the case was scheduled for Feb. 25.

According to a probable cause affidavit in the case, when Sullivan came home on Thursday morning, he asked his mother for gas money. He had previously texted her about gas money, as well.

His mother, laying back in a recliner, replied that she hadn’t yet gone to the bank, so she didn’t have cash, the PC affidavit states.

“Jeremiah went into the kitchen, grabbed a large kitchen knife and came back into the living room,” Sullivan’s mother told authorities. She added that he was grunting like a “gorilla.”

Sullivan’s mother said that her son came down with the knife like he was going to stab her in the heart, so she turned and used her right arm to block him and grabbed the knife with her left hand. “Blood started squirting everywhere and once Jeremiah saw the blood, she thought he freaked out and stopped,” the PC affidavit states.

The woman yelled for her husband to come and shortly after he did, Sullivan ran out of the house, according to the PC affidavit.

Sullivan told authorities that his mother’s husband had come after him with a knife, so he had to defend himself, and his mother got in the way, the PC affidavit states.
