CORVALLIS — The 13 valedictorians for the Corvallis High School Class of 2017 plan to study premedicine, civil engineering, business and biomedical engineering, either locally or as far away as Boston.

Valedictorians are Shannan Bialek, Rachel Conner, Colleen Corrigan, Josephine Crofoot, Taylor Hurley, Myoungju Kathryn Kang, Laura Moon, Manya Mutschler-Aldine, Lindsay Popowski, Benton Spirek, Julia Wall, Hannah Whipple and Haley Wilson.

Shannan Bialek is the daughter of Mike Bialek and Kris Bialek and has a 4.0 grade point average.

Shannan plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and study chemical biosciences on a pre-medicine track.

She is a National Merit Finalist and earned academic recognition from the University of Oklahoma, Oregon State University and University of Utah.

She was involved with the Society of Women Engineers, National Honor Society, volunteer at the Regional School of Ballet and Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center and a Key Club member.

Rachel Conner is the daughter of Stephen and Susan Conner and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans attend the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon.

Rachel was a member of the CHS dance team and co-captain; National Honor Society historian; King Legacy advisory board scholarship recipient; Stone Soup volunteer; Girls on the Run coach; and National Merit Scholarship recipient.

Colleen Corrigan is the daughter of Lisa and George Corrigan and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to attend the University of Southern California and study biochemistry with a minor in public health.

Colleen was the student body president; involved with the Mr. and Ms. Spartan program; Junior Crew member; played viola in the Corvallis Youth Symphony; National Merit Commendation Scholar; Corvallis School Board representative; AP scholar; PEO National Scholarship; Elks Most Valuable Student; Kiwanis, CHS varsity tennis state qualifier; varsity volleyball; Rotary Club speech district winner; Zonta and Rotary Club officer.

Josephine Crofoot is the daughter of Andre Alyeska and Kristi Crofoot and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to attend Oregon State University and earn a degree in civil engineering with minors in humanitarian engineering and Spanish. She plans to then join the Peace Corps.

Josephine was the choir president; Key Club editor; Spanish dual immersion program; lacrosse team member; Benton County 4-H youth ambassador; Oregon All-State Honor Choir; treble voice ensemble; and concert choir.

Taylor Hurley is the daughter of Dorann and Rick Hurley and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to attend the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Taylor was the Green Club treasurer; National Honor Society president; played basketball, volleyball and track; was the junior class president; participated in the Mr. and Ms. Spartan program; Rotary Club outstanding female student; and earned the Citizen-Scholar Athlete Award.

Myoungju Kathryn Kang is the daughter of Hwi Joo Lee and Dong Seung Kang and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to study biomedical engineering and biochemistry at the University of Rochester in New York.

Myoungju was a member of the Corvallis swim team; National Honor Society; Mr. and Ms. Spartan pageant; and worked at a chemical engineering laboratory in South Korea over the summer.

Laura Moon is the daughter of Un-Ku and Kathy Moon and has a 4.0 GPA.

Laura plans to attend the Honors College at Oregon State University.

She was active in soccer and on the dance team; Key Club; Mr. and Ms. Spartan pageant; received gold and silver keys from the Scholastic Art and Writing program; and is a National Honor Society member.

Manya Mutschler-Aldine is the daughter of Sue Aldine and Ben Mutschler and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to attend the University of Puget Sound.

At CHS, Manya was a member of the wind ensemble; Corvallis Youth Symphony; Mutswi Wombuya Marimba Ensemble; National Honor Society; Society of Women Engineers highest honors in science and math.

Lindsay Popowski is the daughter of Jill and Thomas Popowski and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to study engineering at Harvey Mudd College.

Lindsay plays the violin; is a member of Key Club; Interact Club; National Honor Society; and was a National Merit finalist.

Benton Spirek is the son of Frank Spirek and Diane Ensminger and has a 4.0 GPA.

He plans to attend the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University to major in biological sciences en route to a pre-medicine track.

Benton was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club; pitched for the baseball team; a member of the Nordic Ski Team; and cross country runner.

Julia Wall is the daughter of Denise and Matthew Johnen and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to major in cell and molecular biology at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.

She was active in wind ensemble, marching band and pep band; CHS swim team; interned at ZAP Technologies; and is a Type 1 diabetes awareness advocate.

Hannah Whipple is the daughter of tori Geter and Matthew Whipple and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to major in International Studies and Political Science at MacCalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Hannah was the National Honor Society secretary; Mr. and Ms. Spartan program head coordinator; Z Club president; Interact Club; Green Club; UNICF Club president; Model United Nations; Girls State; and earned the Penn Alumni Book Award.

Haley Wilson is the daughter of John and Nancy Wilson and has a 4.0 GPA.

She plans to attend Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, to study business and environmental studies.

Haley played volleyball; was president of the Green Club; National Honor Society; and interned at the Starker Arts Garden for Education.

Salutatorians

CHS salutatorians will be Jacob Brant, Cassidy Donaldson, Mylene Gorzynski, Olivia Helback, Jordan Holdaway, Ellery Lewis, Turtle McClosky-Potter, Ivy McClure, Alasdair Padman and Brad Stein.

Jacob Brant is the son of Dawn and Mike Brant and has a 3.94 GPA.

He plans to attend the Honors College at the University of Utah.

Jacob was the soccer team captain; Mr. and Ms. Spartan program; and National Honor Society historian.

Cassidy Donaldson is the daughter of Jeremy Donaldson and has a 3.98 GPA.

Cassidy plans to the University of British Columbia and study earth and ocean sciences.

She was a member of the lacrosse team; Mr. and Ms. Spartan treasurer; and National Honor Society vice president.

Mylene Gorzynski is the daughter of Mark Gorzynski and Esther Parent and has a 3.96 GPA.

She plans to study biophysics and biochemistry at the Oregon State University Honors College and to play soccer for the Beavers.

Mylene participated in soccer and track; National Honor Society; 4-H; volunteered at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center; AYSO referee; and she earned numerous honors in soccer and track including state and district placings.

Olivia Helback is the daughter of Sue Helback and Max Folsom and has a 3.96 GPA.

Olivia plans to study biology at the Portland State University Honors College and become a veterinarian.

She was captain of the robotics team, varsity cross country runner and earned the Oregon Seal of biliteracy.

Jordan Holdaway is the son of Laura Holdaway and Ronald Holdaway and has a 3.98 GPA.

He plans to study biology at the Oregon State University Honors College.

Jordan was a member of Key Club; on the tennis team; National Honor Society; Science Olympiad National Tournament participant; and held a computational biology internship at OSU.

Ellery Lewis is the daughter of Heidi and Todd Lewis and has a 3.98 GPA.

Ellery plans to attend LBCC and the Oregon State University Honors College and major in biology.

She was a member of the National Honor Society; earned a Gold Key from the Scholastic Art Awards; she enjoys beekeeping, gardening and weight-lifting.

Turtle McClosky-Potter is the daughter of Laurie McCloskey and John Nelson has a 3.98 GPA.

She was a member of Key Club; National Honor Society; played lacrosse; CHS concert choir; and Peer Tutor.

Ivy McClure is the daughter of Linda Blauin and Scott McClure and has a 3.96 GPA.

Ivy plans to attend the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon and major in music education.

She was a member of the CHS wind ensemble; concert choir; CHS ultimate Frisbee team; National Honor Society and National Merit commended.

Alasdair Padman is the son of June and Laurence Padman and has a 3.98 GPA.

He plans to study English literature and cinematography at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.

He was a member of the National Honor Society; played bassoon in the wind ensemble and alto saxophone and pep band; he was co-editor of Variations, the CHS literary arts magazine.

Brad Stein is the son of Rick and Brenda Stein has a 3.96 GPA.

He plans to study electrical and computer engineering at Oregon State University.

Brad was manager for the basketball and football teams; a member of the National Honor Society; president of the Interact Club; Key Club; Mr. and Ms. Spartan; and Drama Club.
