G-T land use request denied

The Corvallis Planning Commission voted 3 to 2 Wednesday night to deny a request to remove the planned development overlay on the Gazette-Times block, putting a proposed sale of the property on hold.

The paper’s publisher said he would appeal the decision to the City Council.

Commissioners Frank Hann, Ron Sessions and Roger Lizut voted to deny the nullification request, citing concerns that new construction on the site would be incompatible with the historic homes in the surrounding neighborhood.

Jasmin Woodside and James Feldmann said they shared those concerns but voted to approve the request, saying there were insufficient grounds for denial under city code.

Kent Daniels previously recused himself from the case because he lives near the newspaper property and is an officer of the neighborhood association, which opposes the request.

Tucker Selko and Jim Ridlington were absent, and Chairwoman Jennifer Gervais only votes in the event of a tie.
