December 8, 1929 — February 23, 2019
Elmer Louie Gerig, 89, of Albany, passed away on February 23, 2019, at the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House surrounded by his family.
Elmer was born December 8, 1929, in Wayland, Iowa, to Martin and Emma (Nofziger) Gerig. He grew up in Iowa, where he attended school until the eighth grade. As an adult, he earned his GED.
Elmer married Florence Schrock on August 27, 1950, and they were married for 68 years. His love of God, our precious Savior, and his family were near and dear to his heart.
He moved to Oregon in 1948. While in Oregon, he worked at Western Veneer/Willamette Industries for 19 years. He then transitioned into the construction business by obtaining his contractor license and starting his own business, Elmer Gerig Builder. For many years he enjoyed working with his hands. He was honored to have been the main contractor of the Sunday school wing and the chairlift project at Fairview Mennonite Church, where he was an active member. He also installed the vinyl siding on a number of the duplexes and worked on the construction of the Lakeside Center at the Mennonite Village.
After he retired from his contracting business, he stayed busy working on some apartments and houses that he owned.
Elmer loved spending time with and being surrounded by his family, although he was most proud of his wife. He always had a smile on his face when he was interacting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to the Bible on tape, playing card games (especially Pinochle), fishing, gardening, and eating ice cream and popcorn.
During his life, he went on mission trips to Mexico and Albania with Fellowship of Christian Farmers and to Costa Rica and Ecuador through Fairview Mennonite Church.
In 2014, he moved to the Mennonite Village where he was an active member of the community. He tried to work out at the fitness center six days a week. His Wii bowling team took second place in their last tournament.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Florence (Schrock); children, Clayton Gerig of Lebanon, Russell (Brenda) Gerig of Lebanon, Joyce Vomocil of Albany, Joleen (Jeff) Blunck of Corvallis, Roberta (Phil) Schrock of Albany, Dale Gerig of Lebanon, Nate (Karen) Gerig of Albany, Kenny (Shanna) Gerig of Albany, Vernon (Ellen) Gerig of Hillsboro, Iowa, and Tim (Susan) Gerig of Albany; sister, Minnie Chaffee of West Unity, Ohio; 32 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Emma; and siblings, Elsie, Mabel Miller, Christian Emanuel, Frances Yutzy, Mary, Melvin, Allen, Eldon Laverne, Willard, and Emery.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, at Fairview Mennonite Church with a burial to follow at Fairview Mennonite Cemetery.
