September 8, 1976 — January 1, 2019

Grant Foster Converse died January 1, 2019, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Corvallis. He was 42 years old.

Grant was born to Janet and Clinton Converse in Kodiak, Alaska, on September 8, 1976. He was adorable, a fact corroborated by his being crowned Kodiak’s cutest baby during the town’s 1977 Fourth of July celebration.

In 1990, Grant and his mother moved from Palmer, Alaska, to Corvallis. While still in high school, Grant won Barker-Haaland Insurance’s local Christmas light display contest.

Grant graduated from Crescent Valley High School and Linn-Benton Community College, then completed a Bachelor of Science at Oregon State University, majoring in Geography. After taking several geology classes, Grant became passionate about emergency preparedness, frequently forwarding checklists and articles on geologic hazards and gifting emergency supplies to friends and family.

Grant’s children, Drew and Kolten Converse, born in 2001 and 2004 respectively, were the pride and delight of his life.

In 2007, Grant met Angela Lalley Nelson and her two girls, Alauna and Olivia, and they became a joyful family of six. Grant was involved with the kids’ many activities, managed their soccer teams, and enjoyed camping in the Redwoods, exploring the Oregon Coast, and spending time outdoors with his family.

After high school, Grant worked for HP’s security team for several years. In 2011, Grant began rescuing, repairing and selling furniture discarded by other OSU students. The business quickly evolved into Corvallis Furniture and expanded to three locations.

Grant was sweet, hard-working, honest and generous. He enjoyed life, loved talking to people, and was known for his big smile and sunny disposition. Ever ready to help others in need, Grant was trained as an emergency responder, organized charity drives through his business, and became an organ donor upon his death. He touched the lives of many people and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his fiancé, Angela Lalley Nelson, and their combined family, Drew Converse, Kolten Converse, Alauna Nelson, and Olivia Nelson. Grant is also survived by his mother, Janet Converse of Corvallis; his father and stepmother, Clinton and Lynda Converse, of Pillager, Minnesota; brother, Paul Converse, and nephew Evan Converse, of Juneau, Alaska; sister, Kristin Converse, of Bellingham, Washington, and nephew, Alex Wolf, of New York City.

A celebration of life was held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis on January 6. Donations for the Converse and Nelson children can be made to Citizens Bank in the name of Dennis Lalley.
