April 14, 1942 n Sept. 20, 2007
At approximately 4 p.m. on Sept. 20, Jon ten Broek passed into eternity. A gifted guitarist, autoharper, composer, singer, teacher and author, Jon's passion for music was to edify and bless all of us for over 40 years. Jon was 65 years old.
A master at fingerstyle guitar, Jon learned the basics from his father, also a guitarist. His detailed and definitive approach to this style of acoustic guitar was a de facto method of teaching in the Mel Bay guitar instruction books.
Jon was also a true innovator on the autoharp. He developed an adaptation of the tone bar placement, and utilized a chromatic melody/rhythm method by incorporating the guitar's fingerstyle right hand technique on a folk instrument that is traditionally strummed, greatly expanding the instrument's potential.
Jon grew up in Southern California, and moved to Oregon as an adult. He lived in Newport, performing in venues up and down the Oregon Coast. Jon moved to Bend, then to Corvallis in the 1980s, quickly becoming a part of the local music community. He was a local favorite at the Best Cellar Coffee House, The Book Bin and the Old World Deli. Jon also recorded five albums on CD.
