Three trash bins set afire late Sunday

Apartment dwellers and other neighbors near downtown Corvallis gathered late Sunday night at the site where three metal trash containers were set on fire in Southwest Washington Avenue alleys. Two containers were beside each other in the 800 block, and one was on fire in the 700 block, when Corvallis Fire Department was dispatched at 11:55 p.m.

Armed with portable fire extinguishers, Corvallis police officers had the fires under control and almost extinguished by the time firefighters arrived to douse the remaining flames.

The fire at the side-by-side trash bins caused minor damage to the exterior of an apartment complex laundry room. The third fire spread to a nearby fence and caused minor damage to a vehicle.

No occupied structures were threatened. The damage was estimated at $1,200.

Police couldn’t determine how the fires were set or whether accelerants were used because they couldn’t tell what the trash bins originally contained, said Lt. Cord Wood.

Anyone with information about these fires can call the Corvallis Police Department at 541-766-6924.
