A woman died Friday morning on Highway 99W south of Corvallis after striking a garbage truck head-on, the Benton County Sheriff said.
Authorities identified the woman as Judith M. Hart, 78, of South Beach, Oregon.
The crash took place about 11:30 a.m. near Lakeside Drive, Sheriff Scott Jackson said.
A Republic Services garbage truck was traveling northbound on the highway and had stopped at a home to empty its trash can, Jackson said. The woman was traveling southbound, left her lane for an unknown reason and struck the garbage truck head-on, he said. The Republic Services employee was not injured.
Deputies are processing the scene in an effort to understand what caused the crash, Jackson said.
North and southbound traffic was diverted from the highway onto Finley and Eureka roads, he said.
