Franklin Pierce was the Democratic nominee for president in the election of 1853. He had been such a dark horse candidate that no one expected him to win. He proved to be such a terrible president that his own party changed its campaign slogan for the next election to "Anybody but Pierce." Herein lies a good example for the Republican Party of today.
