A few weeks ago I wrote complaining of columnist John Rosemond that “he has only one tune to sing.” I rather like to read advice columnists, but his had become monotonous. It’s not so much that I disagree with his parenting advice. I am rather of the “old school” in this respect myself. But apparently many people enjoy John Rosemond’s columns and they have written to counter my complaint.
However, on April 7 he wrote “…no one has ever established beyond reasonable doubt that psychiatric disorders are biologically based. And yes, that includes schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.” Really? Here the man is out of his depth. And such “advice” has the potential for great damage, as people suffering from serious psychiatric disorders are extraordinarily sensitive to well-meaning remarks that discourage them from accepting professional help, especially medication. Beware!
