The power of words showed up in two Gazette-Times headlines recently. Challengers to Sara Gelser's Oregon Senate seat are "upstarts" (G-T, Friday, Oct. 19, front page), while challengers to the Albany City Council (G-T, Saturday, Oct. 20, page A6) are "newcomers."
All of the individuals are new to political life.
The New World Dictionary defines an upstart as one who behaves in a presumptuous, aggressive manner, and a newcomer is, well, just a fresh face in an old game.
