Last fall, with the location of the homeless men’s winter shelter temporarily solved, our attention was on whether to rename certain buildings on the Oregon State University campus. On Nov. 14, 2017, the Gazette-Times published a letter headlined "What is Gained in Renaming Effort?" The author asked, “What exactly is the end game African-Americans are aiming for?” and offered this advice, “Start by articulating what it is you ... want.”
Having good faith in the author’s comments, I’m offering resources to answer the question and to illustrate the comment. Please read the Equal Justice Initiative’s July 10, 2018 online report “Segregation in America” at this website: https://segregationinamerica.eji.org. Time and interest permitting, continue with Randall Kennedy’s book “Race, Crime and the Law."
It will take effort on that author’s part, but the result will leave no ambiguity about what African-Americans want, and their end game.
