Karli Plucker’s plea to help low-income families is a comment on the sad state of America today. ("Bill Would Assist Low-Income Families," May 14 letter to the editor.)
Why is it working families often have to choose between eating and rent? With 1 in 5 children growing up in poverty, as well as 1 in 7 seniors struggling to make ends meet, there is work to be done. Our voices can help build the political will to make this happen. By calling and/or writing those who represent you in Congress, we can make sure all Americans have their basic needs met. Right now we can ask them to support an increase in the Housing Choice Vouchers program (Section 8), since only 25% of those qualify for housing vouchers actually receive them. Also support Oregon House Bill 2032, and let your congressional senators and representative know that it is time to end poverty in the world’s richest country.
