My heart is heavy with sorrow upon reading the words of fear presented in John Penrod's letter, "We Are Being Taken Over." The specter described represents only a tiny fraction of the Misérables that seek our mercy.
I am led by the teachings of Jesus. Whenever confronted with a moral dilemma I try to ask myself, “What would Jesus do?” Throughout his ministry, Jesus consistently taught compassion and generosity for the less fortunate. Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. If you don’t remember it, you can Google it.
The golden rule teaches us to: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”
Is it so hard to put yourself in the shoes of these unfortunate people? No one is asking you to give up all your belongings. Just give them the kindness and compassion you would want if you were in their position. They are not the “Other” as mongered by the fear merchants. They are our brothers and sisters on this small blue marble traveling through the cosmos. Peace on Earth.
