For the members of our community who are “outraged” at the renaming of buildings on the Oregon State University campus: How would you have felt all these years if the buildings were named “Stalin”, “Hitler” or “Amin”? Insert any name of someone who you perceive as a perpetrator of inhumane acts. Many of us do not want to continue to honor those whose time of “progress” led to atrocities.

For me, the renaming of buildings is one acknowledgement for the incredible injustices perpetuated upon those who lived here when European “settlers” arrived. We cannot undo the incredible injustices perpetuated by slavery either. Our great American heritage includes invasion and massacre for the sake of economic gains under the guise of “freedom.” We need to start acknowledging our whole history with what happened to the indigenous peoples and the kidnapped persons who for centuries were trafficked as slaves.

I support the renaming of buildings to honor those who we know were here when the Eurocentric white settlers arrived; they are the ones to honor for they lived a life which did not harm the planet. And, I support the renaming of buildings for those who stood up to Oregon's not-so-long-ago racist laws.
