Pump my own gas? Oh please no!
In answer to: “Self-Service Gas is Long Overdue," Dennis Ruth's recent letter: I am assuming, Mr. Ruth, that your letter of April 1, regarding another attempt to legalize customers pumping their own gas, was a sad attempt at an April fool’s joke. We Oregonians have voted this down more than once and there are good reasons for doing so. Oregon, being a forward-thinking state, is way ahead of its neighbors.
I also have traveled across the country and know how to pump my own gas but that does not mean my time doing so can not be better spent in relaxing, reading or listening to a book, etc. The time we spend waiting for others to serve us is very short and have you noticed, those workers, while they work, are dressed for the inclement weather we often have here in Oregon. Many of us — seniors and others — would prefer to enjoy a short wait, inside our warm, dry cars, thank you!
Issues with faulty gas pumps and attendants unwilling to leave their warm office to assist with delinquent pumps are only a part of the problem. If you must pump your own gas, may I suggest, go to Washington, California, Idaho, and the list goes on. Living in a unique state that allows us the privilege of having an attendant, dressed for the job, pump our gas while we enjoy a quiet moment, or a dash into the store for a snack, is a gift to enjoy.
