The recently released Fourth National Climate Assessment stated “the impacts of global climate change are already being felt in the United States and are projected to intensify in the future.” While national action on climate change has been discouraging, this week there was finally some terrific news.
Republican and Democrat cosponsors introduced the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. This bill places a price, a fee, on carbon pollution at the well, mine and port. The fee increases each year with the money collected returned to households as a dividend every month.
Households can then spend this money according to their needs. For the majority of households the monthly dividend will exceed their increased energy costs. Additionally, America’s carbon emissions will be reduced by 33 percent within 10 years, 2.1 million additional jobs will be created, and all of us will breath cleaner air improving our health and saving lives. To gain these benefits and turn this bill into policy we need to take action.
The majority of Americans who support action on climate change must make their voices heard loud and clear in Washington DC. It takes less than seven minutes to call our three federal representatives: Sen. Wyden (202-224-5244), Sen. Merkley (202-224-3753) and Rep. DeFazio (202-225-6416). Letting them know that you support the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act will benefit today’s Americans and future generations.
