I'm encouraging Corvallis taxpayers to contact Corvallis School District 509J leaders regarding how some of the money we approved might be spent. There are two ideas below for you to consider.

The first one is adding all gender-neutral restrooms. Prior to moving forward with this, we should know what will be eliminated in order to build these facilities. It's my understanding that they cost more money and require more space than standard restrooms. I would not be in support if they take away space or other amenities that would have normally gone to classrooms. I think a more cost-effective idea would be to have two to three gender neutral restrooms for any student to use and then have the remaining restrooms be gender-specific. This would provide a private space for students requiring a neutral area, preserve space for other areas and possibly reduce some costs.

The second idea is the sustainability position. Although I support taking care of our Earth, I do not support a sustainability coordinator being added to payroll until class sizes are under 20 at all elementary schools, and under 25 in all middle and high school programs. I feel the money for this position would be better spent on hiring additional staff to work directly with children. Addressing academic needs should come before a sustainability coordinator.
