Serious public health hazards of avoiding measles vaccination were documented in Ella May T. Wulff’s excellent letter of Feb. 4. Many people who avoid the vaccine choose to believe that it may cause autism, based on old report in the British journal The Lancet, which was discredited and retracted long ago.
States that allow children to avoid vaccination for “philosophical” reasons have misused that word. A philosopher is, in Greek, a friend of science. Scientists believe the Earth is round, man has been on the moon, and vaccination is second only to water purification in preventing human illness.
Another health peril is on the rise. Recent research indicate that, like alcohol, maternal use of: cannabis causes serious infant abnormalities. Among these are increased impulsivity, inattention, ADHD and decreased intelligence.
