I had to laugh when I read the letter by Bud Laurent pontificating on the homeless issue, slamming NIMBYism, putting the homeless “problem” in quotation marks as if those problems don’t actually exist; all this after admitting he lives two miles east of the city and doesn’t have to face this “problem” like people who actually live in Ward 2 do. Laurent wants us to vote for Charles Maughan for Ward 2 councilor because from two miles away, Laurent is better to judge what’s better for Ward 2 than any of us are.
I am happy to inform Bud Laurent that I am not the moneyed interest that he assumes heartlessly opposes a homeless shelter being blocks away from me because of how it would affect my bottom line, (as if that itself is somehow illegitimate), I am a resident of this ward and am aware of the very real “problems” the neighborhoods of the two previous shelter locations have had.
Laurent also wants us to vote for Maughan in order to strike a “balance” in policy making. Looking at the lineup of communists, socialists and other assorted “progressives” that are running for local offices, adding yet another rubber-stamp ideologue to that lineup isn’t what I’d call balance.
It seems to me that Catherine Mater would be the better choice for the position for people who actually live and work in this ward. This council is going to desperately need the refreshing dose of levelheadedness that she’ll provide.
