Act now or we will face “untold suffering due to the climate crisis.” That was the warning issued earlier this month by over 11,000 scientists. And we know this. We read about similar dire alerts almost daily. Climate impacts are accelerating at a faster pace than anticipated. The need to take effective action is critical.

Let's all get behind something that can have an immediate impact — a carbon fee and dividend.

Seven House members have introduced the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend (H.R. 763). With 72 co-sponsors, this bill encompasses all the recommendations of 3,500-plus economists, 27 of whom are Nobel laureates, and embodies the "single most powerful way" to combat climate change, according to the International Monetary Fund. Surely that must carry some weight.

This bill imposes an ever-increasing carbon fee at the source (coal mine, refinery, port). Studies show that it will reduce our fossil fuel emissions down to 1990 levels in 10 years.

And for many of us, an important aspect of this bill is that it is progressive. The revenue from the carbon fee will be returned to every individual in the U.S. We want to protect those of us who are the most vulnerable to rising costs.

It should be our highest priority to make this happen. Please call or write to your congressional representative and ask them to support H.R. 763. For more details about this bill, go to: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/energy-innovation-and-carbon-dividend-act/
