In his Feb. 8 letter to the editor, James Farmer, in discussing our nation’s political divide, asked me, “How can we heal the divisions when we don't hear the truth?” What James fails to understand is that our divisions are not caused by a lack of facts, but a lack of judgment.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan once famously said, “You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.” It is a fact that Donald Trump lies. It’s his default position. The fact-checking industry is booming as it attempts to catalog the president’s myriad lies, numbering in the thousands, more than 8,000 to date.
As Moynihan granted, we are entitled to our own opinion. And, if James wants to believe all the lies coming from Trump, his minions and hangers-on, he is clearly entitled. But, trying to sell it to critical, well-informed thinkers is a Sisyphian task and a fool’s errand.
