Regarding "State Lags in Disaster Preparedness" (Democrat-Herald, July 28), we need to face the fact that Oregon needs a sales tax. Washington and California have a sales tax, and they are not lagging behind in disaster preparations.
Oregon can't fund necessary expenses (e.g., education and disaster warning systems) without a sales tax; it is as simple as that. Property is taxed to the max and bond measures are unfairly impacting the homeowners, too. The rich get around income tax, as very little of their income is from wages. They make money on their wealth such as moving stocks around. A sales tax will not be applied to food.
While I'm at it, vote for Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 primary. She and Tom Steyer are the only ones with the oomph to defeat President Donald J. Trump. Elizabeth Warren will tax rich people 2% on all wealth over $50 million. I think that leaves them plenty of untaxed booty!
