Flag Day: Flag retirement

Mayor Rocky Sloan and Philomath Fire & Rescue chief Tom Miller help Scouts cut sections out of a flag before going into a fire barrel at last year's event. This year's ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the fire station.

Philomath Fire & Rescue and the Boy Scouts of America plan to host a Flag Day retirement ceremony at 6 p.m. June 14 at the local fire station.

The U.S. flag code states, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

For those who have unserviceable flags they would like to retire, they can be dropped off at the fire station.
