The Philomath FFA, which is associated with the Philomath High School Forestry and Natural Resource Education program, collected 200 pounds of canned food during a "Drive Away Hunger" effort last month. Katelin Walker, of PHS Forestry and FFA, reported that the items were donated to the local food bank.

Statewide, Les Schwab Tire Centers of Oregon and the Oregon FFA partnered to organize the event and according to a press release, the drive brought in 510,150 pound of food, enough to provide more than 380,000 meals.

The Oregon FFA is part of the National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farms of America. The youth organization prepares student members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. Philomath had an opportunity to receive funding for trips and student scholarships.
