Les & Bob's baseball: Brandn Vogler

Pitcher Brandn Vogler goes to the plate earlier this season for Les & Bob's. Vogler tossed a complete-game five-hitter in Sunday's 7-6 win over Cascade.

You could call it rivalry weekend on the coast.

Philomath’s Division 1 baseball team headed west for two games on both Saturday and Sunday against host Newport and Cascade. Both of those schools are Oregon West Conference rivals for the Warriors in spring baseball.

It’s been a rough summer in terms of wins and losses but Les & Bob’s put together an impressive performance this past weekend by taking three out of four games in Newport.

Philomath swept the host team, 8-5 and 17-5, and split with Cascade with a loss of 10-9 and a victory of 7-6 — both of those games decided on walk-off fashion.

Philomath (5-12) opened the Newport trip with a game against the Cubs on Saturday. Les & Bob’s stopped a three-game skid by hanging on for a three-run victory.

Levi Webber’s crew trailed 1-0 in the second before erupting for four runs. Dylan Bennett started it off with a one-out triple and he came home on a Brian McClelland double. After Calvin Snuggerud was hit by a pitch, Garrett Blowers drove in McClelland with a single. Snuggerud later scored on an Adam Hernandez ground-out.

Philomath scored a run in the third when Michael Slater singled, stole second, moved to third on a grounder and came home on a Snuggerud hit.

The team added two more in the fourth. Hernandez led off the inning with a single and Stearns followed with an RBI double. Hiner drove in Stearns with a double of his own.

In the seventh, Les & Bob’s added an insurance run. Bennett walked, stole second, moved to third on a McClelland single and scored on a Snuggerud sacrifice fly.

Stearns, Hiner and McClelland each had two hits for Philomath. Stearns and Snuggerud each drove in two. On the mound, Marshall Brattain picked up the win, allowing 11 hits, five runs and five walks with seven strikeouts in five innings of work. Bennett threw the last two innings to earn the save, allowing no hits or runs and had one strikeout.

Les & Bob’s then took on Cascade and for the second straight time, the Cougars beat Philomath on a walk-off hit. Cascade defeated Philomath, 14-13, on the final day of the Les & Bob’s Tournament on July 1.

In Saturday’s matchup against the Cougars, Philomath scored three in the first. Hernandez led off the game with a triple and later scored on Hiner’s two-out double. Slater followed with a single to bring in Hiner and Bennett drove in Slater on a double.

Down 6-3 in the fourth, Les & Bob’s got back to within two of the lead with a run. Tyler McHuron-Guss walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Stearns.

Cascade held a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth before Les & Bob’s pushed three across to tie the score. Hiner and Slater opened the inning with a double and single, respectively. Bennett was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Snuggerud.

Snuggerud came through with a single to score Hiner, although Slater was thrown out a third for the inning’s first out. Brandn Vogler connected on a double to drive in both Bennett and Snuggerud.

Cascade regained the lead in the bottom half but Les & Bob’s responed with two in the sixth for a 9-8 advantage. Brattain walked and made his way around the bases to score on a passed ball. Hiner singled and came home on a Slater sacrifice fly.

Cascade won the game on a two-run, two-out double.

Hiner’s hot bat continued with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Hernandez and Slater each had two hits and Bennett collected two RBIs. Hernandez pitched six innings, allowing 12 hits, eight runs with six earned and no walks with three strikeouts. Bennett came on in the seventh.

The two teams met again to start Sunday afternoon and this time, Philomath turned the tables on the Cougars by winning on a walk-off hits of its own.

Les & Bob’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Slater led off with a double, Stearns reached on an error and Bennett walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, McClelland drive in two runs with a single and Bennett later scored when Snuggerud reached on a fielder’s choice.

Cascade battled back to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the third but Philomath tied it in the bottom half. Stearns doubled, reached third on a passed ball and scored on a Hiner ground-out.

In the fourth, Les & Bob’s scored two more. Vogler walked and later scored on a Blowers single. Blowers then advanced all the way around the bases on a series of passed ball, including for a run.

Cascade tied the game, 6-6, in fifth and the score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh. Slater, the leadoff batter, reached on an error and ended up on second followng an errant throw. Stearns then ended the game with a walk-off single to score Slater.

Stearns went 2 for 3 and McClelland had two RBIs. Vogler had an exceptional pitching performance by going the distance and allowing five hits, six runs and two walks with 11 strikeouts.

Philomath ended the weekend with a 17-5 rout over Newport in five innings. Les & Bob’s never trailed in this one, building an 11-0 lead before the Cubs could get on the scoreboard.

Les & Bob’s scored four in the first on two hits, one of those a double by Stearns. Philomath then unleashed in the third with seven runs on just four hits. McClelland, Slater and Stearns had doubles in the inning and Newport helped the cause by issuing two walks and hitting two batters.

In the fourth, Philomath scored twice — both crossing home on errors. Another run came across in the fifth, also on a Newport miscue. And in the sixth, McHuron-Guss and Stearns had hits to help Philomath score three more runs.

Newport errors were an issue with eight for the game.

Stearns went 4 for 5 with three doubles and three RBIs. Slater finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs. McHuron-Guss was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. McClelland went 2 for 3.

McHuron-Guss threw all six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs — four earned — with no walks and six strikeouts.

After falling in that close one against Cascade in the Les & Bob’s tournament, Philomath came back the following evening for a Monday matchup early last week against South Albany. For the second straight game, Les & Bob’s lost on a walk-off.

Playing on the road, Philomath took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. But South Albany hit back-to-back one-out doubles with runners on base to get the win.

Les & Bob’s had trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth. Stearns opened the inning by reaching on an error and he quickly scored when Bennett followed with a triple. Hiner then connected on a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead.

In the seventh, Blowers was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a Bennett ground-out. Philomath scored its first run in the fourth when Hiner doubled and scored on a Devan Hunsaker single.

Hiner went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Vogler went the distance at pitcher, allowing 10 hits, six runs and two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Les & Bob’s plays Monday at West Salem, Tuesday at home against Crescent Valley and Wednesday at North Salem in the season finale.
