PHS girls soccer: Halle Hewitt

Philomath's Halle Hewitt battles for the ball in a game from earlier this season. The team dropped a 1-0 decision Tuesday to No. 1 North Marion.

No. 1 North Marion scored in the second half to pull out a 1-0 girls soccer victory Tuesday at Philomath.

"It was really a hard-fought battle," Philomath High School coach Mat Phelps said. "Philomath controlled almost all of the game, but couldn't find the net in many chances."

After a scoreless first half, the Huskies got on the scoreboard on a counter.

North Marion has been tough in Class 4A this season with the top ranking and a 11-1 overall record. The Huskies have now won eight straight, all in the Oregon West Conference, and have clinched the league title for an automatic berth into the playoffs.

Philomath dropped to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the conference. The Warriors, sitting at No. 11 in the OSAA rankings, are trying to finish strong to earn a spot in a play-in game.

The team will host Cascade Thursday in another key matchup. The Cougars are currently in second place in the conference standings with Philomath right behind in third. The winner of the game would have the inside track on hosting a play-in game.

The Warriors will wrap up the regular season Tuesday at Yamhill-Carlton.

Play-in games are scheduled to be played before or on Oct. 28.
