PHS boys basketball: Tyler Pfarrer

Philomath upped its record to 6-5 Wednesday with a 58-41 victory at Scappoose.

The Philomath High School boys basketball team won for the third time in its last four games with a 58-41 road victory Wednesday night over Scappoose.

The game was tight through the first three quarters with the Warriors holding a 44-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. But Philomath brought it all together over the final eight minutes with a 14-3 run.

Nolan Jackson, a 6-foot-2 senior, scored 19 points on six field goals, including two 3-pointers, and 5 of 7 on free throws. Kenan Conner, a 6-3 senior, had 16 points on six field goals and 4 of 5 on free throws.

Joey Wagenknecht and Chris Bendle each scored 13 to lead the Indians (6-6).

The game could be called Philomath's real first road test of the season. The Warriors entered the game with a 2-3 record at home and a 3-2 mark in tournaments at neutral sites (although one could argue playing North Bend at Marshfield High isn't exactly neutral).

Four of Philomath's six victories this season have been by double digits.

As of Thursday, the Warriors were No. 8 in the Class 4A OSAA rankings with their 6-5 record. Banks is sitting at No. 1 and Oregon West Conference members Newport and Cascade are at No. 2 and No. 9, respectively.

Philomath plays Friday at Tillamook. The Cheesemakers enter the game with a 9-3 overall record with two of those setbacks to Newport and the other to Marshfield.
