PHS boys basketball: Nolan Jackson

Philomath senior Nolan Jackson pulls up for a jumpshot in a game earlier this season. Jackson had a team-high 13 points in Saturday's win over North Valley.

A win is a win and for Philomath, the state playoffs are calling.

Veteran head coach Blake Ecker said the Warriors didn't exactly tear up the court with perfect basketball Saturday in a 52-34 victory over North Valley. But Philomath got the job done in the play-in round to move on to the playoffs for a date Saturday at Mazama.

"To win by that much and not play our best game of the season, that's saying something," Ecker said.

Although the game time had not been set as of Sunday morning, the Warriors will head into the Mazama game as the No. 10 seed. The Skyline Conference champion Vikings go in as the No. 7 seed.

"We'll go to Mazama and it'll probably be a hostile atmosphere," Ecker said. "They're a lot to guard and they're very aggressive."

Ecker, who was to study film later Sunday, said Mazama is a more perimeter-type style of opponent with several players back from last season.

In the win over North Valley, senior Nolan Jackson had a team-high 13 points for the Warriors, which included a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Kenan Conner also hit double digits with 10 points.

"There were times when we'd shoot ourselves in the foot, get a steal and come down on the other end and make a poor choice mentally and physically," Ecker said about the North Valley game. "If we could just convert those opportunities in a higher-percentage fashion, we'd be a lot more successful."

Philomath held a two-point advantage going into the second quarter but then went on an 18-5 run to go up by 15 by halftime.

"One of their shooters went out with a sprained ankle and he was one of their scorers and their best shooter," Ecker said. "When we made a nice run, their point guard, he went out with a bloody nose."

North Valley couldn't recover in the second half and ends its season at 11-13. Colton Lauby led the Knights with 18 points.

Philomath heads into the Mazama game with an overall record of 15-8.
