PHS girls soccer: Carrie Lillis

Philomath senior Carrie Lillis scored twice in the second half in the team's 3-1 win Tuesday at Newport. Alivia Pittman had assists on all three goals.

The Philomath High School girls soccer team ended a four-game winless streak Wednesday with a 3-1 victory at Newport.

With the victory, the Warriors now stand at 3-2-2 in the Oregon West Conference and are in second place behind unbeaten North Marion. Overall, Philomath's mark improves to 5-4-2.

Philomath took a 1-0 lead in at the half on an Anita Acevedo goal, the assist on the play going to Alivia Pittman. Carrie Lillis then scored twice in the second half, both of those goals also coming on Pittman assists.

"It was a good all-around performance for PHS. We controlled possession, had lots of shots and defended well," PHS coach Mat Phelps said. "Carrie was strong up top and Alivia was dangerous all night on the outside. Our midfielders did a great job of controlling both sides of the ball."

Philomath takes the rest of the week off and will see action again this coming Tuesday at home against North Marion.
