The Oregon State football team plans to play Nicholls State in Corvallis next season.
Nicholls State announced the game as its opener. The Beavers, however, can't officially confirm the game since the final contracts have not been signed, yet.
OSU has a Sept. 1, 2012 game at Brigham Young and a Sept. 8 game at home against Wisconsin scheduled. There's an open date on Sept. 15.
The delay by the Beavers may be because they are moving around its schedule to accommodated this game.
This will be the first time the two programs meet. Nicholls State is a lower-division Football Championship Subdivision team out of the Southland Conference.
Nicholls State coach Charlie Stubbs was an assistant coach for the Beavers from 1985-90 under coach Dave Kragthorpe.
"I like Nicholls State," coach Mike Riley said. "When I was with the (New Orleans) Saints that's where we had training camp (in Thibodaux, La.)."
Seven true freshmen are expected to play this season, Riley said. Besides the already known running backs Malcolm Agnew, Terron Ward and Storm Woods, receiver Brandin Cooks, kicker Trevor Romaine and safety Tyrequek Zimmerman, add defensive end Dylan Wynn.
Linebacker DJ Welch was going to play, but was sideline with an elbow sprain. He still might if he heals quickly.
OSU researched it, and if Cooks and Agnew start against Sacramento State on Sept. 3 as expected, that will be the first time true freshmen begin the season as starters at running back and flanker.
Mitchell plays in pain
Senior safety Lance Mitchell (abdominal tears) said he has the same issued senior linebacker Cameron Collins had that forced offseason surgery.
Mitchell plans to play through the pain and take days off from practice when needed, and hopefully not have surgery.
"It hurts more on some days than others," Mitchell said. "If we can maintain it and get the right rest, I'll be fine on game days."
Junior running back Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) was cleared for contact Thursday for the first time in training camp.
He knows the offense and hopes to enter into the running back rotation.
