LONG BEACH, Calif. — Oregon State suffered its second straight softball loss with a 6-4, eight-inning setback to Long Beach State in Sunday's Stacy Winsberg Tournament finale.
The Beavers (8-2) started off strong in the top of the first inning as Lovie Lopez walked, Missy Nunes reached first on an error and Frankie Hammoude reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Lopez to third but got Nunes out at second. Freshman Bailey McLaughlin reached first on an error that scored Lopez.
Long Beach State tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Things stayed stagnant until the top of the fifth when Maia Rader reached on a fielder's choice and Shelby Weeks singled through the right side advancing Rader.
Lopez followed with a fielder's choice before Nunes dropped a single into shallow center field to drive in Rader. Hammoude followed with a two-run single to left field to extend OSU's lead to 4-1.
Long Beach State tacked on two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth before Oregon State's defense would limit the damage.
LBSU tied things in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Oregon State loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but failed to score.
Long Beach State finished the game hitting a two-run homer.
Sophomore Mariah Mazon started in the circle for the Beavers and struck out three batters in five innings. Meehra Nelson pitched the remaining two innings.
Oregon State returns to action Friday at the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, California, facing Nevada and Pacific.
