WACO, Texas — Oregon State’s softball season came to an end on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Kent State in the Waco Regional.
The Beavers finish the season 28-27 after a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament.
However, the Beavers made a second straight exit after two losses in the double-elimination tournament.
Like in Friday’s 3-2 loss to James Madison, the Beavers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Michelle Sass worked a one-out walk before McKenna Arriola singled to center. Jessica Garcia advanced Sass to third with a fielder’s choice, with Arriola out at second.
Shelby Weeks delivered a single to left to plate Sass for what turned out to be the Beavers’ only run of the game.
Kent State took the lead in the top of the fifth.
A leadoff single and walk gave the Golden Flashes life. Emily Dobbin delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game before Hunter Brancifort followed with a single to center to give Kent State the lead.
Oregon State freshman pitcher Nerissa Eason relieved Taylor Cotton and worked out of what turned out to be a bases-load, no-out situation to keep the Beavers within a run.
Oregon State looked to get even in the sixth as Weeks opened the frame by reaching on an error and Alysha Everett walked.
Lovie Lopez grounded out to first to advance the runners but Eason and Fallon Molnar both grounded out to end the threat.
Sass had a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh but a flyout and groundout ended the game.
Ronnie Ladines went the distance in the circle for Kent State, scattering six hits and walking two while striking out six.
Cotton allowed four hits in four-plus innings, with four walks and 11 strikeouts in her final appearance for the Beavers.
The Beavers will lose three seniors — Cotton, Sammi Noland and Natalie Hampton, the all-time career RBI leader at OSU.
Kent State was coming off a tough 1-0 loss to regional host and No. 15 seed Baylor on Friday.
