BATON ROUGE, La. — Meehra Nelson and Mariah Mazon combined to toss a shutout and help the Oregon State softball team to a 2-0 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday at the Purple and Gold Challenge.
The Beavers closed the day with a tough 3-2 loss to No. 7 LSU after taking a 2-0 lead in the first.
Nelson (5-0) went 5 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, striking out two for the Beavers against Louisiana Tech, while Mazon earned her second save.
All of the action came in the first inning as freshman Hope Brandner had a sacrifice fly to right field to plate junior Shelby Weeks, while a two-out, bases-loaded single from junior Kayleen Shafer brought in freshman Missy Nunes.
Nelson settled in from there, allowing only one hit from LA Tech in the second, fourth and fifth innings, and only one Bulldog runner made it as far as third during her time in the circle.
Against LSU, Shelby Weeks had an RBI triple and Alysha Everett added a sac fly in the first for a 2-0 lead.
But LSU scored three times in the fourth to rally for the win. Oregon State had the tying run at third in the seventh but couldn't score.
The Beavers (7-3) close out the tournament against LSU at 10 a.m. Sunday.
