TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State softball team capped off a 5-0 weekend at the Kajikawa Classic with an 8-3 win over Western Michigan on Sunday morning.
The Beavers got off to a 3-0 start in the top of the first inning. Shelby Weeks singled and Missy Nunes was hit by a pitch to set up freshman Frankie Hammoude, who soared one over the outfield fence to give the Beavers the lead.
Western Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and a two-run homer.
The Beavers would strike back in the top of the sixth when junior Fallon Molnar came in to pinch hit for Jessica Garcia and got on base off a Broncos error. Garcia would come back in to run and advanced to second after Nunes was hit by a pitch for the second time. Hammoude stepped back up to the plate and blasted her second three-run homer of the game for a 6-3 lead.
OSU extended its lead in the top of the seventh after Izzy Owen walked and Maia Radar singled. After both runners advanced a base on a throwing error, Weeks grounded out to second base with Owen scoring for a 7-3 lead.
Garcia later scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Meehra Nelson started in the circle for the Beavers and struck out three batters. Junior Nerissa Eason entered in the bottom of the fourth inning and finished with six strikeouts to earn her first win of the season.
The Beavers return to action Friday at the Stacy Winsberg Tournament in California.
