STANFORD, Calif. — Mason Pengilly and Isaiah Locsin scored late takedowns to clinch Stanford's 21-15 win over Oregon State, Saturday, at Maples Pavilion.
For just the second time in program history, the Cardinal (7-4, 3-1 Pac-12) defeated the Beavers (5-6, 1-2 Pac-12) in a wrestling dual.
It was a tough start for the Beavers, who dropped four of the first five bouts.
157-pounder Hunter Willits lost a 5-2 decision in the match opener. Rodney Williams then fell at 165 pounds by technical fall while 174-pounder Myles Terry lost by major decision, before Bob Coleman lost an 11-6 decision at 184 pounds.
Redshirt junior Corey Griego put the Beavers on the scoreboard with a second-period pin at 197 pounds. Griego's six points pulled Oregon State within striking distance before the midway break, 15-6.
The featured matchup of the afternoon came at heavyweight with two top-10 ranked wrestlers in Amarveer Dhesi (No. 8) and Nathan Butler (No. 5). Dhesi continued his unbeaten streak in dual meets with an 8-5 decision over Butler. Dhesi's win brought the Beavers within 15-9.
No. 12-ranked Ronnie Bresser won his fourth match in a row at 125 pounds, aiding in the comeback attempt by Oregon State. Bresser won by decision 6-1, shrinking the Beavers deficit to 15-12.
Oregon State was ahead late in the two bouts that followed, but dropped both of them at 133 and 141 pounds by one-point decisions.
149-pounder Josh Reyes won the final match by decision at 9-4, bringing the final score to 21-15.
